Laff-it-up is a ministry dedicated to bringing clean, family friendly comedy at a reduced reasonable price for the purpose of helping clean comics hone their skills and at the same time reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and take the too serious Christian to the level where they can relax and laugh without fear of what a comic might say.
Many Christian households are without the release of comic expression because of the lack of clean comedy available and very purpose for which so many of us live is very serious. Christianity is not to be taken lightly, we certainly do not take it lightly however without this avenue of release, health issues even more specifically behavioral health issues may creep into our families and ministries. (Fancy words for it is dysfunction).
That was the case for the founder of Laff-it-up, 18 years in Bible College, several ministry appointments, miss-appointments and disappointments had caused a very cynical view for him of Christianity, the church, and himself. He didn’t want to feel bad about all this stuff, but it is what it is.
Jesus in His perfect love, creatively moved Pastor Tim into Comedy, he calmed down a little bit, started drinking decaf, remembered how to smile and the rest is Laff-it-up history.
Laff-it-up was the brain child of Pastor Tim Pritchard, born out of the definite need for comedy in his life. Tim had seen a few “Pure Comedy” shows hosted by Thor Ramsey and realized it was time he stop getting people to laugh one at a time and go wholesale. Tim mustered up the courage and contacted Thor Ramsey about trying the comedy circuit. Thor suggested Tim buy “The Killer Stand-up Comedy System” that was a big chunk of change, so He started with the “Stand-up Comedy Quick Start Guide” by the same author Steve Roye. After writing and practicing Tim contacted Thor again who told Tim to talk to him after the next show. Tim did and they talked about giving Tim his first stage appearance at the next show. The goal was 2 minutes, minimum 3 laughs a minute (Sounds easy right? Try it) Well the date crept closer and closer, but in the end the Brea Improv decided to discontinue the show. Tim, not to be deterred went ahead an plunked down the big “Chunk of change” and devoured the Killer Stand up system. It was worth every penny. In the months that followed, Tim kept in contact with Thor about the possibility of reviving the show with Thor. However Thor is in huge demand recently finishing a tour with David Phelps formerly of the Gaither Vocal Band, and now in a very successful solo career. A setback yes, but not the end of the story. Pastor Tim started practicing, and then performing in front of his church family (Thanks ya’ll for the support) and went from rough, to mediocre, to above mediocre and continues to improve. (3 laughs a minute not usually a problem anymore) Tim’s senior pastor Brad Keuchler suggested he go ahead and launch this new show and ministry, but with no experience and no connections, he waited, and waited. Then through an unbelievable series of divine intervention Tim managed to put together a name, a logo, two of the best in clean comics (Gilbert Esquivel and Jonathan Blake) and together the three of them pulled off a great show (mostly Jon and Gilbert) the first of what we expect will be many. So come, enjoy this great ministry, and bring your friends who don’t know Jesus yet, this is a great way to reach them as each show ends with a trip down the Romans road (Or other evangelistic message) and a call to salvation |
